Opportunity is now available to join the new Surf Life Saving Club at Thornton Beach.  Following an enthusiastic response from the Thornton community at a public meeting held in September 2007, the decision was made to proceed with the establishment of a new surf club.

An inaugural board of directors have been appointed to run the club which has now received its certificate of incorporation.

"The key focus of the upcoming season will be the training and development of lifeguards" says Angi Edwards, spokesperson for the club.  "We are fortunate in having some experienced instructors on the team to provide this initial training".

In addition to lifeguard development the club will also be providing lifeguard patrols from the 27 December 2007 through to the 13 January 2008.  A number of guards from outside the area will be utilised to support these patrols until the Thornton club has its own qualified lifeguards.  "While it will take several years for the club to develop new guards to a senior level, we have attracted a very experienced volunteer guard to the club to help with this mentoring process" says Angi.

A junior surf programme for children aged 7 - 13 years will also run during the above period.  This will be supported by a pool programme each Tuesday evening at the Whakatane pool.  The pool programme is open to members of all ages. It will initially be used to teach the basic Lifeguard water skills and assist in developing fitness.
