Lake Taupo is Australasia's largest fresh water lake. To give you an idea, it's the same size as Singapore. With the stunning mountain peaks as a backdrop, Lake Taupo and its surrounding area offers visitors one of the North Island's most extraordinary natural attractions.
The lake itself was created by a massive volcanic eruption and there are many Maori tales and legends told about this region. The Taupo region has a multitude of activities available.
Every adrenalin pumping activity you can imagine is counted for: mountain biking, bungee jumping, skydiving, white water rafting, jet boating, kayaking, paint ball and much, much more.
Taupo is also the gateway to Whakapapa, New Zealand's largest ski area and there are some great hiking and mountain biking trails through the spectacular Tongariro National Park, a dual world heritage area that offers fantastic eco adventure.
You will find the most unspoilt and uncrowded scenery here. There are herb fields and forests, tranquil lakes and desert-like plateaus and active volcanos.
